International Mountain Summit - BMW Forum: What moves us?
picture

shortdescription
Mobility is a basic need of human beings. But how mobile are we really in our everyday life, in our job and in our leisure time? What is driving us? The BMW forum gave a thought-provoking impulse on occasion of the Kiku. International Mountain Summit to think on how mobility as a means to an end is connected to mobility as end in itself. In this context a bow was drawn from the beginnings of mobility, the movements up to the modern and trend-setting types of mobility, such as e-mobility.

shortdescription
How does the future of mobility look like? Social, economic and technological developments set increasingly complex requirements for the transport system and its efficiency. New technologies can provide an essential contribution for shaping mobility in the future. But technologies alone will not be able to cope with challenges like climate change, lack of resources and demographic changes. Dr. Peter Phleps from ifmo and Prof. Dr. Hermann Knoflacher from Technical University of Vienna joined the podium at a science talk in the Aula der Wissenschaften in Vienna. Moderator of the event was Gabriele Gerhardter, head of innovation and mobility at OEAMTC.

Study: | "Mobility Y – The Emerging Travel Patterns of Generation Y" | Publications |
shortdescription
After the mobility of young people in industrialized countries had developed analogous to the generel growth of travel for decades, there was indication of change since the turn of the millennium: Various countries reported decline shares of licensed drivers, vehicle registrations etc. among young adults. Against this background, ifmo analyzed the development of mobility behavior of young adults in industrialized countries throughout four decades. The study confirmed the findings for trend changes in young adults mobility for the study countries USA, Germany, France, Great Britain, Norway and Japan. These were analyzed in more detail for Germany. The results showed that socio-economic developments are a main driving force for this development and that changes of travel behavior can be predominantly found among young men.

Study: | "Mobility Y – The Emerging Travel Patterns of Generation Y" | Publications |
shortdescription
Which are the relevant influencing factors for changes among young adults mobility behavior? How did they impact on mobility behavior? The ifmo research project on altered mobility behavior by young adults had already identified socio-economic factors to play a relevant role in this context. This lead tot he question, which other factors were important here. This was the problem statement for this expert workshop. 22 interdisciplinary experts from various types of institutions (department of transport, corporations, academia) participated in the workshop. According to expert opinion, the following factors had a major influence on young adults mobility in the last years: changes in the transport system, proliferation of ICT, changed framework conditions for social interaction, consumption preferences, attitudes and psychological factors.

Mobility 2030 – Between Dynamism and Standstill
Dr. Irene Fiege and Frank Hansen present the second update of ifmos study for passenger and freight traffic in Germany, which is the only, regularly updated study of its kind, covering all modes of transport. The current study builds on the Institute’s tradition of providing long-term future forecasts in the area of mobility. However, in times of economic crisis and escalating public deficits, resource shortages and climate change, but also of highly dynamic emerging markets, any prediction of future developments is fraught with much more uncertainty. Based on the assessments and visions of more than 80 experts from business, industry and academia, three very different scenarios for the future (mobility) development in Germany have therefore been developed.

Study: | "East-West Freight Traffics 2030" | Publications |
shortdescription
The freight volume between Eastern and Western Europe will double in the next twenty years.
This is a core finding of the new ifmo study "East-West Freight Traffics 2030“. Because of its foreign trade and its geographical position within the enlarged EU, Germany plays a key role in this development. But what will be the traffic consequences of this development? Which goods will be transported where, using which transport modes? What will the be the future challenges of these developments for Germany? To answer these questions, the Institute for Mobility Research (ifmo) initiated and commissioned a study on “East-West Freight Traffics 2030” from ProgTrans AG. The first of its kind, the study offers detailed findings about the development of freight traffic between Western and Eastern Europe. It provides a retrospective analysis of traffic flows and development forecasts for the year 2030.

Studie: | "Transport Infrastructure Benchmarking Europe" | Publications |
shortdescription
How do the other countries perform? What can they do better? And why do they do it differently?
Institutions, that successfully master competition, frequently pose those questions. A successfully approved and frequently applied method for answering those questions is benchmarking. The EU member states have in part very different ways of supplying transport infrastructure despite the increasing influence from Brussels.
Thus, differences in the performance of infrastructure are very likely. It is also good to look at those. The aim is to learn from the best. This is why the Institute for Mobility Research (ifmo) commissioned the Institute of Transport Economics at the University of Münster (IVM) and the KCW GmbH to conduct the study “Transport Infrastructure Benchmarking Europe”, which was finally presented at dbb forum berlin.
